5th Grade First Aid

Maya applying pressure to a wound on her partner during our practice session: What to do if someone is bleeding...

5th Graders are learning first aid skills during health class.  Using information from the American Red Cross, and other resources, they are practicing skills and discussing different scenarios when an injury occurs. All this is helping students work toward the World Class Outcome of creating plans to achieve personal well-being.  Students are asking excellent questions and organizing plans for different types of injuries. Later in September, Colleen Potton, Life Safety Educator with South Metro Fire Rescue, will present information to our 5th graders about brain injuries and the effects a serious brain injury may have on a person.

First Day of School!

Today was the first day of the 2016-17 school year!  Wow!  Where did the summer go?  Students and staff are all prepared for another wonderful year at Timber Trail.  Going along with our #positivity theme, I wanted to share Jon Gordon's Positive Teacher Pledge.  I hope I can live up to this!

2nd Grade 4 Cs partner project

2nd Grade Students were assigned a partner, given several challenges, and asked to create a drawing that both students were proud and happy with.  Throughout the project students shared and listened to each other's ideas, coordinated the use of a limited number of supplies with everyone, demonstrated patience, cooperation and resiliency.  During this project, students were shown artwork that was created in a different classroom and asked to write compliments.  Some of the compliments are included under the selected pictures that are displayed below. This project was completed after our unit on bullying and friendship.  I especially enjoyed seeing the students' excitement when creating compliments for others, and as they read the compliments others gave them.

"I like your mountains."
"I like the coloring and the background."
"Your sky is very awesome."

"I think you did well on the roller coaster.  I like the merry go round"
"I like the fountain."
"I like that there's a rainbow."

On March 4, I attended the Colorado Healthy Schools Summit at the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel.  It was an opportunity to see amazing things other schools in Colorado are doing to promote health and wellness, network with other health minded professionals, learn from innovative educators in breakout sessions, and listen to inspiring messages from keynote speakers. It was truly a great day to learn and celebrate health and wellness!

Sampling a Healthy Breakfast with 3rd Grade

With the help of parents, 3rd grade students participated in a nutritious food sampling lesson. With an emphasis on breakfast, students sampled 6 different foods and drinks that represented all 5 food groups.  Each student evaluated each sample, and commented on their likes and dislikes. Nobody left hungry!

February is Heart Month!

Students at Timber Trail are participating in the American Heart Association's Jump Rope For Heart event.  By jumping rope, students are bringing awareness to heart health, and raising funds for the American Heart Association.  Once again, our TTE families have amazed us with their generosity!

Healthy Food in First Grade

Students in first grade read Jack & the Hungry Giant, by Loreen Leedya story about eating right with MyPlate.
Afterwards, students created their own MyPlate and added pictures of foods they enjoyed.
